Using Cognitive Bias Modification-Appraisal Training to Manipulate Appraisals about the Self and the World in Analog Trauma

Abstract Background Dysfunctional appraisals are a key mechanism in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Experimental manipulations of via Cognitive Bias Modification-Appraisal (CBM-App) training targeting cognitions related to the ‘self’ has shown affect analog trauma symptoms. The present study aimed conceptually replicate and extend previous findings by comparing newly developed ‘world’ original training, investigate moderating role locus control (LOC) on intrusions. Methods Healthy participants ( N = 173) were exposed distressing films as an induction. Next, received positive or negative CBM-App, either self- world-relevant appraisals. LOC assessed pre- post-training. During week after laboratory session, recorded their intrusions associated distress diary. One later, trauma-relevant symptomatology was assessed. Results Positive compared CBM-App induced training-congruent appraisals, independent trained cognition (self vs. world). However, there no effect symptoms did not moderate training’s effect. Conclusions Our results underline validity method experimentally manipulate since we fully further research mechanisms with transfer effects is warranted.
